Raj yoga in a kundli, and when it actually becomes active

Also in: हिन्दी

A raj yoga is formed when the ruler of an angular house in your kundli, meaning the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th, and the ruler of a trine house, meaning the 1st, 5th or 9th, come into relationship with each other. They can sit together, look at each other across the chart, or occupy each other's signs. Tradition holds that such a combination indicates a rise in standing during the period ruled by those planets. The second half of that sentence is the half most people never hear.

That is why two questions get asked about raj yoga and only one gets answered online. The first is "do I have one", which any calculator will answer, usually generously. The second is "then why has nothing happened", which is the real question, and the answer is timing.

What actually forms a raj yoga

The classical rule is a relationship between two kinds of houses. The angles are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th, the visible and active parts of life. The trines are the 1st, 5th and 9th, the parts tradition associates with merit, intelligence and fortune. When the lords of one meet the lords of the other, the combination is formed.

The relationship can take four forms: the two planets sitting in the same house, the two exchanging signs so that each sits in the other's house, the two aspecting each other across the chart, or one placing itself in the other's house. The strongest version named in the texts is the meeting of the 9th and 10th lords, because it joins fortune to action, which is a plain and sensible idea: what a person is lucky in and what a person does for a living are the same thing.

There are other named families. Combinations formed by the lords of the 6th, 8th and 12th houses placed in one another's houses are called a reversal raj yoga, and tradition holds these give results through difficulty rather than around it. The cancellation of a weak planet's weakness forms another family, which I have written about separately in the piece on neecha bhanga raj yoga.

Why a calculator says you have several

Free tools report raj yogas generously because the definition, applied mechanically, catches a great deal. Every chart has an ascendant lord, and the ascendant is both an angle and a trine, so its lord is already half of a potential combination with almost anything. Add every aspect and every exchange and the average chart produces a list.

What the list does not tell you is strength, and strength is the whole of it:

  • Are the planets forming the combination themselves capable? A raj yoga formed by two weak planets is a partnership between two people with no money.
  • Is one of them burnt by closeness to the Sun, or sitting in a sign it does not do well in?
  • Do the same planets also rule difficult houses in your chart? A planet that rules both a trine and the 8th house carries both duties.
  • Where do the two planets actually sit? A combination formed inside the 12th house behaves differently from the same one formed in the 10th.

A tool that returns a count is answering an easier question than the one you asked.

When a raj yoga becomes active

This is the part worth reading twice, because it is the difference between astrology as a fortune slip and astrology as something you can use.

Tradition holds that a planet gives its results chiefly during its own mahadasha, and within that, during the sub-periods of the planets it is connected to. A raj yoga formed by, say, the 9th and 10th lords is understood to be live during the periods of those two planets. Outside those windows the combination is in the chart but not in the foreground. This is why a person can carry a genuine raj yoga and spend their thirties struggling: they are running the period of a planet that has nothing to do with it.

Three things shape that window in practice.

Whose period is running. The mahadasha sets the theme of a long stretch of life, and the sub-period inside it sets the theme of the months. A combination shows most clearly when both belong to the planets that form it.

Whether the planet can deliver in that period. A period lord that is weak, or that also rules a difficult house, gives a mixed result even when it carries a fine combination. The period does not create capacity, it opens a door.

What the slow planets are doing overhead. Traditional practice treats the movements of Saturn and Jupiter through the chart as triggers rather than causes. They tend to mark the moment a period's promise becomes visible, which is why change so often arrives when one of them crosses an important house.

There is a limit here I want to state plainly. Nobody can hand you a date. Anyone who tells you your raj yoga activates on a particular Tuesday is selling certainty that the tradition does not contain. What a careful reading can do is name the window, say what it is likely to concern, and tell you what preparation would let you use it. That is a smaller claim and a more useful one.

What a rise in standing means today

The texts were written in and for royal courts, so their language is about kingdoms and ministers. Read literally, it becomes absurd, and that is where the internet's promises of millionaire status come from.

Read sensibly, a raj yoga indicates movement upward from wherever a person started: a first person in a family to hold a professional job, a small business that becomes a real one, authority that arrives without a fight. In a life, it usually looks like a decade that ended in a very different place from where it began. It does not look like money falling out of the sky, and no chart I have read ever removed the need to do the work.

If you want the combinations in your own chart looked at properly, with the periods laid out alongside them, that is what a full reading is for.

Questions people ask

How many raj yogas should a chart have? The count is not the measure. One combination formed by two strong, well placed planets does more than six formed by weak ones, and a chart with none of the classical combinations can still support a good, stable life. Treat any tool that grades you on quantity with suspicion.

Can a raj yoga fail to give anything at all? Yes, and the texts say so. If the planets forming it are weak, burnt by the Sun, placed in houses of loss, or if their periods fall very late in life or in childhood, the combination can pass without a visible result. This is not a way of explaining away a bad prediction. It is part of the original rule and it is skipped only because it makes for poor advertising.

Do I need an exact birth time to check raj yoga? Yes, more than for most things, because these combinations are defined by house rulership and house rulership is decided by the ascendant. An hour's error can hand the 9th house to a different planet, and then the combination reported is not a weaker version of yours, it belongs to somebody else's chart. The arithmetic behind that is in the piece on what a yoga calculator actually checks.
