The types of raj yoga in a kundli, and why nearly every chart has one

A raj yoga forms when the lord of an angular house and the lord of a trine house come together in a chart, by sitting in the same house, by aspecting each other, or by sitting in each other's signs. The angular houses are the first, fourth, seventh and tenth. The trines are the first, fifth and ninth.

Because the first house belongs to both groups, and because seven planets have to share twelve signs between them, this happens easily. Nearly every kundli contains at least one raj yoga, and most contain several. So the question a calculator answers, do you have a raj yoga, is almost always yes and almost never useful. The questions worth asking are which one, how strong the planets forming it are, and when their periods run.

What the word is actually claiming

Raja means king. The texts that name these combinations were written in a world of courts, and what they described was position at court: rank, patronage, the ear of someone powerful, land and title. That world is gone, and honest practice translates rather than pretends.

What survives from the old descriptions is a shape rather than a prediction. A raj yoga indicates a capacity to rise relative to where a person started, to be given responsibility, to be recognised in a field. It does not indicate money by itself, it does not indicate happiness, and it certainly does not indicate that anything arrives without work. The chart is a leaning. The life is the person.

The main families

The angle and trine combination. The basic form described above. The strongest and most quoted version pairs the lord of the ninth house with the lord of the tenth, fortune with work, and the texts treat that pair as the best of them.

Vipreet raja yoga. Formed from the difficult houses rather than the good ones, when the lord of the sixth, eighth or twelfth sits in one of those three houses. The traditional reading is a rise that comes out of trouble, through the failure of an obstacle rather than the arrival of a favour: the competitor withdraws, the illness turns out to be the thing that changed the person's direction. It has its own names, one for each of the three lords.

Neecha bhanga raja yoga. Where a planet sits in the sign it is weakest in and other placements are held to lift that weakness, described as a rise arriving after a hard start. Its conditions are looser than the others and worth reading carefully, which is why it has a page of its own.

The five great person yogas. Formed when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn occupies its own sign or its sign of strength while standing in an angular house from the ascendant. Each carries a name and a temperament, and these are the ones that show most visibly in a person's bearing.

Gaja Kesari. Jupiter in an angle from the Moon, often grouped with the raj yogas though it is defined from the Moon rather than the ascendant. About one chart in three has it, and I have written separately about what that means.

Mahabhagya. A stricter condition on the ascendant, Sun and Moon, with its own page here.

What separates a working raj yoga from one that only reads well

This is the part the calculators cannot do, and it is most of the work.

The condition of the two planets. A combination made of planets that are themselves weak is a weak combination. Strength here means the sign a planet occupies, whether it is close enough to the Sun to be burnt up, and whether it is moving forward or apparently backward.

Where the combination sits. The same two lords meeting in the tenth house and meeting in the twelfth are not the same event. A combination formed in a difficult house tends to describe a rise that is complicated, private or hard to hold on to.

Who else is in the room. The presence of a lord of the sixth, eighth or twelfth in the same combination is described as spoiling it, or at least as attaching a cost to it. Very few real charts are clean, and a practitioner's job is to say what the cost looks like rather than to pretend it is absent.

When the period runs. This is the one that decides whether a person ever feels a combination at all. A yoga expresses itself in the mahadasha of the planets that form it. If your best combination is made of planets whose long periods fall in your sixties, the first fifty years may not feel like a chart full of raj yogas, and no amount of ritual will move a period forward.

About the free kundli calculator

Generate the chart. It is free here and it is a real chart, computed properly rather than looked up in a table. Without signing up for anything you get your ascendant, your Moon's sign, the nakshatra the Moon is in and the period you are currently running. The full set of placements, every planet's sign and house, is cast and kept for you once you make a free account, and that is what you need in order to check any of the combinations above for yourself.

What a chart generator can honestly do is show you positions and list the combinations that match a rule. What it cannot do is weigh them, and the four factors above are all weighing. This is why a report that hands you a list of twelve impressive sounding yogas tells you almost nothing, and a person who says that two of them matter, here is why, and here is when, tells you something. If you want the second kind, that is what a reading is for.

Questions people ask

Does having a raj yoga mean I will be rich or famous?

No. The classical descriptions concern position, responsibility and recognition rather than money, and even those describe a leaning rather than an outcome. Nearly every chart has at least one of these combinations, which by itself should tell you they cannot be what separates one life from another.

Why do different websites report different raj yogas for the same chart?

Because they apply different rules, use different chart settings, and differ on what counts as an aspect or a valid combination. Small differences in the calculation also move a planet across a sign boundary for births near one. Where two reports disagree, look at the underlying positions rather than the list of names.

Can a raj yoga be cancelled?

Tradition speaks of a combination being spoiled or weakened rather than cancelled. The usual causes are a weak planet, a placement in a difficult house, or a lord of the sixth, eighth or twelfth joining in. The combination still exists and still shows in its period, but it delivers less than the name suggests.
